Grand Velas is a AAA Five Diamond resort just north of Playa del Carmen, organised into distinct sections — one set deep in the jungle, one on the beachfront — connected by long walkways and golf carts. That structure is the whole planning story: the property offers two completely different photographic worlds, and getting between them takes real time.
We have photographed a portrait session here. The jungle section in particular is unusual for a resort of this class: dense canopy, elevated walkways and green light that looks nothing like the beach frames a few minutes away.
Where to say “I do” — and how each spot photographs
Zen Garden
Large jungle garden with a reflecting pool and ceiba tree. The greenery gives softer backgrounds and more shade than the beach, but natural light falls faster here near the end of the day. Official ceremony capacity is 700.
Zen Pool
Jungle poolside setting for smaller celebrations. It offers more controlled greenery and shade than open sand and can keep ceremony and reception close together. Official ceremony capacity is 100.
Virgen De Guadalupe Chapel
Indoor Catholic ceremony option in the Zen Grand area with nature views and capacity up to 143. It is the most controlled ceremony-light option and removes beach wind and direct midday sun from the equation.
Ocean Terrace
Open ocean-view terrace in Grand Class with ceremony capacity 260. Hard flooring and unobstructed sky make movement and group photos easier than sand, while the open exposure means the ceremony time still matters for faces.
Grand Class Beach
Caribbean beachfront with official ceremony capacity 40 and reception capacity 100. The official site promotes sunset views, but the sun itself sets inland on this coast; use the beach for sea backdrop and late-day sky color rather than promising an over-water sunset.
Grand Class Deck
Ocean-facing terrace with ceremony capacity 100. It gives a cleaner horizon and more stable footing than the beach, making it useful for portraits and ceremonies when a couple wants the Caribbean backdrop without sand.
Chaká Garden
Small garden designed for intimate events, with official ceremony capacity 30. The dense greenery is useful for softer portraits but goes darker sooner than the ocean-facing terraces.
Grand Velas Convention Center
Large indoor backup and reception option with ceremony capacity up to 1,000. Artificial-light planning matters more here than golden-hour timing, so reserve the outdoor portrait window separately if the reception is indoors.

Recommended. With the jungle and beach sections at opposite ends of the property, a first look is what makes it possible to use both. Without one, you realistically get only one of the two worlds.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya is at Carretera Cancun Tulum Km 62 and is divided into Grand Class, Ambassador and Zen Grand areas. Jungle ceremony spaces and ocean-facing Grand Class spaces should be treated as separate production zones, so confirm the exact route and transport method before finalizing a timeline.
