The Ultimate Guide to Tulum Maternity Photoshoot | Find the Best Maternity Photographer in Tulum

Tulum is one of the most beautiful places in Mexico for a maternity photoshoot. The sand is white, the water is turquoise and the palms lean right over the beach. Most of the mothers I photograph here are on a babymoon or a family trip, and the session becomes part of the memory of that trip.

This is how I plan one, from what I have learned on these beaches.

When in the pregnancy

Many mothers choose the last months, when the belly shows clearly but travelling still feels comfortable. There is no perfect week: it depends on how you feel.

If you are flying in for it, check with your doctor and with your airline. Airlines have their own rules for late pregnancy, and it is better to know them before you book.

What time of day

The afternoon. The beaches of Tulum face east, toward the Caribbean, so the sun sets behind the trees, not over the sea. As the afternoon goes on, the light on the sand and the water turns soft and even, and nobody has to squint.

I usually start around 4 p.m. in winter and around 5 p.m. in summer, and adjust to the sunset of your exact date. The midday sun is the one to avoid: it is hard on the skin and on you.

Where: the beach, the palms and the hotel

Tulum gives you three settings in a few steps. The open beach, for the colour of the water. The leaning palms and the driftwood, for shade and texture. And the hotel itself, if it has a garden or a terrace you love.

Some hotels ask for authorisation before a professional session on their property. If you are staying in one, ask the front desk ahead of time so the day runs without surprises.

What to wear

Long, light dresses work best here. They move with the breeze and make the photographs feel alive. White, cream and soft colours look natural against the sand; a full tulle gown makes a stronger statement.

Bring a second look if you like, and plan to be barefoot. If your partner joins, light linen in a similar tone keeps the photographs calm.

The wind

There is almost always a breeze on this coast. It is a gift for the dress and a challenge for the hair. Ask your stylist for a look that can move, and bring a hair tie for the walk to the beach.

Bring the family

A maternity session does not have to be only you. Partners and children make some of the most tender photographs of the day, and children relax quickly on a beach.
