A destination wedding in Mexico
Where, when, what it really costs and what is legal — from someone who has photographed more than 150 weddings on this coast, with the numbers from my own calendar.
Where: the Caribbean coast, from Cancun to Tulum, has the widest choice of flights, the calmest water and the widest choice of venues. When: November to April is dry; 75% of my weddings fall between November and May. Cost: the average international destination wedding is about $41,000, and the guest count moves it most. Legal: many couples sign at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here. Time: my couples wrote, on median, about 9 months ahead.
Most guides to a Mexico wedding are written by agencies that sell resort packages. This one is written by a photographer. I have photographed more than 150 weddings here and watched what works on this coast and what doesn’t. Where I use numbers about “my weddings”, they come from the 137 wedding contracts I have signed since 2019.
The Caribbean or the Pacific
Mexico has two wedding coasts, and they are not the same place with a different name. The light, the sea and the weather all change. Here is the honest comparison.
| Caribbean · Cancun to Tulum | Pacific · Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta | |
|---|---|---|
| Sunset | The beaches face east. The sun sets behind the hotels, and the sand gets soft, even light. | On much of the coast the sun sets over the ocean. |
| The sea | Turquoise, and usually calm behind the reef. | Deeper blue. On many Los Cabos beaches the surf is too strong to swim. |
| Landscape | White sand, palms, jungle and cenotes. | Desert and rock in Los Cabos; green mountains in Puerto Vallarta. |
| Sargassum | Possible, and different every year. | No. |
| Hurricane season | June 1 to November 30. | May 15 to November 30. |
| Flights | Cancun International, with the largest choice of international flights in Mexico. | Los Cabos (SJD) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR). |
| My weddings | 98% | 2% |
I live and work on the Caribbean side, so read the right-hand column as a fair comparison, not a recommendation. For most couples flying from the United States or Canada, the Caribbean wins on flights and on choice. The Pacific wins if a sunset over the water matters more to you than anything else.
Where on the Caribbean coast
Almost everyone flies into Cancun and drives down the coast. The drive is part of the decision, because every guest makes it twice.
| Area | From Cancun airport | What it is like | My weddings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancun and Playa Mujeres | 25–30 min to the hotel zone; 40–45 min to Playa Mujeres | Large resorts and the shortest transfers. Playa Mujeres is quieter and more secluded. | 42% |
| Puerto Morelos | 20–30 min | Big resorts between the reef and the jungle, close to the airport. | 15% |
| Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya | 30–35 min north of Playa; over an hour to Akumal | Design hotels, private estates and villas. | 31% |
| Tulum | 1.5–2 hours (Tulum now has its own airport) | Jungle, cenotes and boutique hotels. | 9% |
The town follows from the kind of celebration you want. If most guests are flying in for a long weekend, a short transfer is a gift to them. If the setting matters more than the drive, Playa del Carmen and Tulum give you villas, jungle and design hotels you won’t find in Cancun.
Resort, villa or boutique hotel
An all-inclusive resort
Most weddings here happen at a resort, and for good reason. Your guests sleep, eat and celebrate in one place, and the resort’s coordinator handles the venue side. Some resorts include a basic package when your group books enough room nights. Ask exactly what it includes and what it doesn’t.
Three things to ask before you sign. First, the policy for outside vendors: many resorts charge a fee for each vendor you bring, and they set and change it themselves. Ask the coordinator to confirm it for your date, in writing. Second, the size of the property: on large resorts, moving between spaces can take time, and that shapes the timeline. Third, whether it is adults-only, before you invite families with children.
A private villa
A villa gives you the place to yourselves and the freedom to choose every vendor. The trade-off is that nothing comes included. Furniture, catering and lighting are all brought in, guests usually sleep elsewhere, and some spaces need permission in advance. Villa La Joya is a good example of how it works.
A boutique hotel or beach club
Tulum especially has small hotels and beach clubs with strong design and a relaxed feel. They suit smaller guest lists. Guests often stay in different hotels, so transport between them becomes part of the plan. My venue guides explain how each place works on the day.
When: month by month
The dry season runs roughly from November to April. Hurricane season is June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk from August to October. Rain here is usually a short afternoon storm, not a grey day.
| Month | Sunset | Weather and sea | My weddings |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Sunset 6:30 p.m. | Dry and mild. A cold front can bring a cooler, windy day. | 7% of my weddings |
| February | Sunset 6:45 p.m. | Dry and mild. | 12% of my weddings |
| March | Sunset 7:00 p.m. | Dry, getting warmer. | 6% of my weddings |
| April | Sunset 7:05 p.m. | Dry and warm. | 15% of my weddings |
| May | Sunset 7:20 p.m. | Hot. | 12% of my weddings |
| June | Sunset 7:30 p.m. | Rainy season and hurricane season begin. | 7% of my weddings |
| July | Sunset 7:30 p.m. | Hot and humid, short afternoon storms. | 4% of my weddings |
| August | Sunset 7:20 p.m. | Hot and humid. Hurricane risk rising. | 4% of my weddings |
| September | Sunset 6:50 p.m. | The wettest month. Peak hurricane risk. | 3% of my weddings |
| October | Sunset 6:25 p.m. | Rainy. Peak hurricane risk. | 7% of my weddings |
| November | Sunset 6:10 p.m. | Drier and fresher. Hurricane season ends on the 30th. | 12% of my weddings |
| December | Sunset 6:10 p.m. | Dry and mild. Holiday season. | 11% of my weddings |
Sunset on the 15th of each month, rounded. Quintana Roo does not change its clocks, so it holds every year.
The ceremony time follows from that sunset. I recommend starting one and a half to two hours before it, so the ceremony gets soft light and you keep the last hour for portraits. That means starting between 4:10 p.m. and 4:40 p.m. in December and between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. in June. The ceremony time guide calculates it for your exact date.
Saturday isn’t the only option. 38% of my weddings are on a Saturday, 19% on a Friday and 14% on a Sunday. The other 29% happen from Monday to Thursday: your guests are on holiday anyway.
What it really costs
According to The Knot’s 2025 Real Weddings Study, the average international destination wedding costs about $41,000, and most destination weddings have 50 to 70 guests. On this coast, the ranges look like this:
- Just the two of you, or under 20 guests: $10,000 to $20,000.
- 60 to 80 guests, with full vendors: $35,000 to $80,000.
- 100 guests or more, or a full wedding weekend: $80,000 and up.
What moves the number most is the guest count, then the kind of venue, then how many events you plan around the wedding day. Typical market ranges for each line:
| Item | Typical range (USD) |
|---|---|
| Resort wedding package | Varies by resort; some include a basic package with a room block |
| Private villa or venue rental | $5,000 – $25,000+ |
| Reception dinner and open bar, per guest | $120 – $300 |
| Independent wedding planner | $2,500 – $8,000 |
| Photography | $3,000 – $8,000 |
| Videography | $2,500 – $6,000 |
| Content creator | $1,000 – $2,500 |
| Florals and decor | $3,000 – $15,000 |
| Music (DJ or live) | $1,500 – $6,000 |
| Hair and makeup | $300 – $800 |
| Outside vendor fees | Set by each venue |
| Guests’ flights and stay (usually paid by guests) | $800 – $2,000 per person |
The first line is the one that varies most. The wedding packages guide lists the packages the main resorts on this coast publish, with their price ranges and what each one includes.
The lines couples miss are the ones that aren’t in any package. The resort’s fee for outside vendors. Transport between hotels and the venue. A welcome dinner or a farewell brunch, which are priced like a smaller reception. And, at raw beach venues, power and generators. Ask about all of them before you sign anything.
Is it cheaper than at home? Usually the total is, but not because each guest costs less. The guest list is shorter, and guests pay their own travel.

Legal or symbolic
A civil marriage performed by the Mexican Civil Registry is legally valid, and it is recognized in the United States. In Quintana Roo you will typically need:
- Passports and the tourist card you receive on arrival
- Birth certificates, apostilled and translated into Spanish
- Blood tests done in Mexico, shortly before the wedding
- Four witnesses with ID
- If either of you was married before, the apostilled divorce or death certificate
Requirements change, so confirm the current list with your venue’s coordinator or planner several weeks ahead. To use the certificate at home, you will usually need it apostilled and translated as well.
That is why most of the couples I photograph sign the legal papers at home and have a symbolic ceremony here. Nobody among the guests can tell the difference. Same-sex marriage is legal in every Mexican state, including Quintana Roo.
Your guests
Destination weddings are smaller, and that is part of their charm. The people who make the trip are the people who really wanted to be there.
- Tell them early. A save-the-date gives guests time for flights, time off and passports.
- Check passports. Guests need a valid passport to fly in.
- Plan the room block. At a resort it keeps everyone together, and it can affect what the resort includes.
- Mind adults-only resorts before you invite families with children.
- Think beyond the day. A welcome dinner or a beach day turns a trip into a celebration. The wedding weekend guide explains which events are worth photographing.
How far ahead to plan
Less far than the internet suggests. The couples who booked me wrote, on median, about 9 months before the wedding. One in four wrote with 5 months or less to go, and 27% wrote more than a year ahead.
The order matters more than the head start. Decide the area, the venue and the date first. Then check the venue’s policy for outside vendors, before you book anyone. The planning guide walks through the order, step by step.
The photographs
On this coast, the light decides more than the location. The beaches face east, so the best light for portraits is the last hour before sunset, when the sun is behind the hotels and the sand turns soft. That is why I build the timeline backwards from the sunset on your date.
Three decisions shape the photographs. The ceremony time, which the sunset sets. Whether you do a first look, which on large resorts often gives you back time with your guests. And whether you use the resort’s photographer or bring your own. The resort photographer guide explains what to ask in writing before you decide.
What can go wrong, and how it is planned
- Rain: usually a short storm. A covered space with good light and a flexible timeline handle it.
- Wind: there is almost always a breeze on the beach. It makes a veil beautiful and undoes a hairstyle made for a ballroom, so ask your stylist for one that holds.
- Sargassum: different every year and on every beach. Where and from which direction you photograph matters more than editing.
- A ceremony that starts late: it almost always does. Starting earlier protects the light for your portraits.
The rain, wind and sargassum guide goes through each one in detail.

Questions couples ask
How much does a destination wedding in Mexico cost?
The Knot’s 2025 Real Weddings Study puts the average international destination wedding at about $41,000. On this coast, an elopement or a wedding for under 20 guests can be $10,000 to $20,000, and 60 to 80 guests with full vendors usually lands between $35,000 and $80,000. The guest count moves the number more than anything else.
Is a destination wedding in Mexico cheaper than a wedding at home?
Usually the total is lower, but not because each guest costs less. Destination weddings are smaller: most have 50 to 70 guests. Guests also pay their own flights and rooms, and a resort can bundle the venue, food and coordinator into one package.
What is the best month for a destination wedding in Mexico?
On the Caribbean coast, November to April is dry and mild. Three out of four of the weddings I have booked fall between November and May. June to October brings heat and short storms, hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and sargassum changes from one year to the next.
Where is the best place in Mexico for a destination wedding?

Is a wedding in Mexico legally valid in the United States?
A civil marriage performed by the Mexican Civil Registry is recognized in the United States. To use the certificate at home you will usually need it apostilled and translated. A symbolic ceremony is not a legal marriage, which is why many couples sign the legal papers at home.
What do we need to get legally married in Cancun or the Riviera Maya?
Passports and tourist cards, birth certificates apostilled and translated into Spanish, blood tests done in Mexico shortly before the wedding, and four witnesses with ID. Previous marriages need extra documents. Requirements change, so confirm the current list with your venue’s coordinator or planner weeks ahead.
Can same-sex couples get married legally in Mexico?
Yes. Same-sex marriage is legal in every Mexican state, including Quintana Roo, where Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are.
How far in advance should we plan a destination wedding in Mexico?
There is no need to panic about time. The couples who booked me wrote, on median, about 9 months before the wedding, and one in four wrote with 5 months or less to go. Choosing the venue and the date first matters more than the head start.
Do we need a wedding planner for a destination wedding in Mexico?
At a resort, the resort’s coordinator handles the venue side. An independent planner adds design, outside vendors and the days around the wedding. For a private villa, a planner is close to essential, because nothing comes included.
