Tulum Wedding Photographer

Jungle, cenotes and the Caribbean for celebrations that feel entirely their own.

Tulum is the only stretch of this coast where the jungle comes all the way down to the sand. That changes how a wedding day feels. The beach faces east, so the sun rises over the water and sets inland, behind the palms. Evenings here are soft and long rather than a sunset over the sea. The last hour before dark is when I make the portraits that end up on your wall.

Most Tulum weddings I photograph happen in boutique hotels built around that light. Casa Malca has its art-filled rooms. Be Tulum sits at the quiet south end. Nomade has tents and fire pits, and Azulik has its treehouse walkways. Ak'iin Beach is the private stretch of sand for a barefoot ceremony, with nothing behind you but water. Dreams Tulum brings a hacienda chapel and a gazebo for larger families. Hotel Bardo sits inland, in the jungle, and asks for a different plan entirely.

Tulum is also where most of my sessions happen. Engagement mornings on the beach. Boudoir in the hotels. Maternity and family sessions. And the cenotes a few minutes inland, for couples who want water and stone instead of sand. If you are planning here, the ceremony time is the first thing we decide together. It depends on the sunset of your exact date.

Questions couples ask about getting married in Tulum

Does the sun set over the ocean in Tulum?

No. The Tulum beach faces east, so the sun rises over the Caribbean and sets inland, behind the palms. What you get in the evening is a long, soft light on the sand, not a sunset over the water. The warm sky shows best from a rooftop or from the jungle side. I plan the couple portraits for the last hour before dark.

What time should a wedding ceremony be in Tulum?

It depends on the sunset of your exact date, which moves by more than an hour through the year. I recommend starting the ceremony between an hour and a half and two hours before sunset. The sun is softer then, and the best light is still ahead for portraits. Under the jungle canopy the light goes earlier than on the open beach, so tell me your venue and your date and I will work it out with you.

How far is Tulum from Cancun airport?

Plan on roughly an hour and a half to two hours by road from Cancun International Airport. Traffic on the beach road in the hotel zone can add to that, so I always build a buffer on the wedding day. Tulum also has its own international airport now, which is much closer to town.

Do Tulum hotels allow an outside wedding photographer?

Most do, but every venue sets its own rules, and they change. Some resorts charge an outside vendor fee. Some beach clubs restrict professional cameras unless the events team has approved them. The venue sets and collects any fee, so the amount for your date has to come from your wedding coordinator, in writing. Ask early, because it is a real line in the budget. Each venue guide on this page says what to ask.

Is sargassum a problem for wedding photos in Tulum?

It can be. Sargassum is different every year and on every beach, and nobody can promise a clear shoreline on a given date. What I can do is choose where, when and from which direction to photograph. Tulum also gives you options that do not depend on the sand at all: the jungle and the hotels themselves.

How much does a wedding photographer cost in Tulum?

Experienced destination wedding photographers in this area generally run from about $3,000 to $8,000 USD for the wedding day, and more for multi-day celebrations with film. Most couples marrying in Tulum book six to eight hours, so the coverage reaches from getting ready to the party. We are local, so travel to Tulum is included or minimal.
