Kanan is an intimate adults-only beachfront hotel in Tulum whose defining feature is the rooftop: an elevated Caribbean view in a hotel zone where nearly everything is built low into the jungle. That single detail changes what is possible photographically — you get an open horizon at eye level rather than always shooting from the sand.

Beachfront Nests
Kanan currently presents these suspended handmade cocoons as a place to exchange vows over the Caribbean horizon. Expect open sun, wind and reflected light from sand and water; late afternoon is easier for portraits than midday.
Rooftop & Sky Deck
The official wedding page describes 360-degree views and both sunrise and sunset color. It is one of the strongest portrait environments on the property, but it is exposed, so wind and hard sun need to be planned around.
Under (The Speakeasy)
A hidden lower lounge used by Kanan for intimate nighttime celebrations. Its dark, sculptural interior can work for editorial reception images, but it will rely much more on available artificial light and flash than the beach or rooftop.
Beach Club & Organic Architecture
Kanan's woven structures, pathways and beachfront club give a very recognizable Tulum look for portraits. Access to specific guest areas should still be confirmed as part of the wedding plan rather than assumed from general hotel access.

Logistics worth knowing
Kanan sits near the southern end of Tulum's beach/hotel zone close to Sian Ka'an. Current routing sources place it roughly 125 km by road from CUN, around 1 hour 45 minutes in light traffic; Tulum traffic can add substantial time. Build movement buffer between the beach, elevated rooftop/sky spaces and lower lounge, and confirm current stair/elevator, vendor check-in and load-in procedures before the wedding.
Vendor rules at Hotel Kanan Tulum
- Kanan's current guest benefits say hotel guests may host personal or modeling photo sessions without a location fee during their stay, but that does not establish wedding-vendor access. A session here in late 2025 did involve a photography fee. Confirm the current wedding photographer approval, fee and access procedure in writing for the event date.
- These rules belong to the hotel, not to me. The hotel sets the fee, charges it and changes it, often from one season to the next and sometimes from one wedding to the next, so I do not publish an amount here: any number you find online is already out of date for your date. Ask your wedding coordinator at the hotel to confirm it in writing, and ask early: it is a real line in the budget. It is also worth asking whether there is any flexibility. Some venues waive or reduce the fee, often when the vendor team books rooms for a few nights or when the wedding is booked through certain agencies, and plenty of couples never find out because they never ask.

The light here
For portraits, protect roughly the final 45 to 60 minutes before sunset and recalculate for the exact wedding date. Kanan's Caribbean beach is on the sunrise side; the physical sun sets inland. The rooftop's 360-degree exposure gives better access to western sunset sky than the beach itself, while the beach can still pick up softer evening color after the direct sun moves behind the property.
