Private villas, haciendas and resorts along the Caribbean coast.
The Riviera Maya is one coast, about a hundred and thirty kilometres long. It runs from Puerto Morelos in the north to Tulum in the south, with Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Akumal in between. It all faces east, so the sun rises over the Caribbean and sets inland. Wherever you are on this coast, the best light of a wedding day is the last hour of the afternoon. What changes from town to town is the character. Puerto Morelos has resort scale. Playa del Carmen has design and private estates. Akumal has turtles and a swimmable bay. Tulum has jungle and boutique hotels.
I have photographed weddings at most of the venues along this coast. In Puerto Morelos, the classic gazebo at Dreams Riviera Cancun and the high-capacity Royalton. Around Playa del Carmen, the Xcaret resorts, Maroma, Mayakoba and Villa La Joya. Further south, Secrets Akumal and the Tulum beach. Each town has its own page below, with its venues, the weddings I have photographed there and the sessions around them.
When couples are choosing between towns, I tell them to decide three things first. Do you want a resort, a boutique hotel or a private villa? How many guests are travelling? Is the celebration one day or a weekend? The venue follows from that, and so does the town. The ceremony time comes last, because it depends on the sunset of your date, not on the hotel.

Questions couples ask about getting married in Riviera Maya
Where exactly is the Riviera Maya?
It is the Caribbean coast of Mexico south of Cancun. It runs for about a hundred and thirty kilometres, from Puerto Morelos down to Tulum. Playa del Carmen is roughly in the middle, with Puerto Aventuras and Akumal further south. Almost everyone flies into Cancun International Airport and drives down the coast.
Which Riviera Maya town is best for a wedding?
There is no single best one. Decide three things first: resort, boutique hotel or private villa; how many guests are travelling; and one day or a weekend. Puerto Morelos has large resorts close to the airport. Playa del Carmen has design hotels and private estates. Akumal has a calm bay. Tulum has jungle and boutique hotels. The town follows from the kind of celebration you want.
Does the sun set over the ocean on the Riviera Maya?
No. The whole coast faces east, so the sun rises over the Caribbean and sets inland. The best light of a wedding day is the last hour of the afternoon, wherever you are. That is why I ask about the ceremony time before anything else. The exceptions are venues with a lagoon or a rooftop that look west.
How far is the Riviera Maya from Cancun airport?
It grows as you go south. Puerto Morelos is about 20 to 30 minutes from Cancun International Airport. The venues just north of Playa del Carmen are 30 to 35 minutes away. Akumal is over an hour, and Tulum is an hour and a half to two hours. For guests, that drive is part of the decision.
Is there a sargassum season on the Riviera Maya?
Not one you can plan a date around. It is different every year and on every beach, so nobody can promise a clear shoreline for a given date. I plan for it by choosing where, when and from which direction to photograph. Gardens, terraces and sheltered coves are all part of that plan.
How much does a wedding photographer cost on the Riviera Maya?
Experienced destination wedding photographers in this area generally run from about $3,000 to $8,000 USD for the wedding day, and more for multi-day celebrations with film. Most couples marrying in the Riviera Maya book six to eight hours, so the coverage reaches from getting ready to the party. We are local, so travel along the coast is included or minimal.
