Cancun Wedding Photographer

Iconic Caribbean settings for celebrations designed to make an entrance.

Cancun gives a wedding scale. The beaches are wide and white, the resorts are built for big weddings without feeling crowded, and there is water in every direction. Punta Cancun is a peninsula, which is why Hyatt Ziva has both Caribbean and bay views. The middle of the hotel zone photographs cleanly, with the white minimalism of Le Blanc. At the southern tip, NIZUC is secluded, with two private beaches. It is one of the few places on this coast where the sun sets over water.

North of the city, Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres are one long, calm beach. I know the resorts there room by room: Finest and Atelier, Dreams and Excellence, Grand Palladium and TRS Coral, and the tower of Garza Blanca at Punta Sam. The sand is wide and the water is turquoise and still. The ceremony lawns and gazebos sit close to the beach, so a timeline flows without shuttles.

The weddings I have photographed here range from intimate ceremonies to a three-day South Asian celebration at Hyatt Ziva, with a Mehndi, a Baraat and a Sangeet. Engagement and family sessions happen here too, usually in the late afternoon. Every resort has its own rules for outside vendors. The guide for each one below says what to ask your coordinator.

Questions couples ask about getting married in Cancun

Does the sun set over the water in Cancun?

Not over the open Caribbean. The Cancun beaches face east, so the sun rises over the sea. But the hotel zone is a strip between the Caribbean and the lagoon, and the sun does set over the lagoon and the bay on the western side. At Hyatt Ziva the bay side, by the lighthouse, is where I take portraits at sunset. NIZUC, at the southern tip, has sunset views from its terrace, its beach and its private dock.

Is the Cancun hotel zone or Playa Mujeres better for a wedding?

They photograph differently. The hotel zone gives you the city energy, the lagoon sunsets and resorts that sit close together. Playa Mujeres, north of the city, is gated and quiet, with a wider, calmer beach and newer resorts. Those are large properties that move by golf cart, so the timeline needs more buffer. Neither is better. It depends on whether you want the strip or the calm.

How far are the Cancun wedding resorts from the airport?

The hotel zone resorts are about 25 to 30 minutes from Cancun International Airport. Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres, to the north, are closer to 40 or 45 minutes. That is one of the shortest transfers on this coast, which matters when most of your guests are flying in.

Can we bring our own photographer to a Cancun resort?

In most cases yes, but each resort has its own policy for outside vendors, and many charge a fee. The resort sets it, collects it and changes it, sometimes from one season to the next. The amount for your date has to come from your wedding coordinator, in writing. It is worth asking whether there is any flexibility, because some resorts waive or reduce it. The guide for each resort on this page says what to ask.

Do you photograph multi-day and South Asian weddings in Cancun?

Yes. Cancun is where I have photographed the largest celebrations, including a three-day South Asian wedding at Hyatt Ziva with a Mehndi, a Baraat, a Hindu ceremony and a Sangeet. The big resorts here have the ballrooms, lawns and terraces to move a large group between events. A weekend like that is planned event by event, not as one long day.

How much does a wedding photographer cost in Cancun?

Experienced destination wedding photographers in this area generally run from about $3,000 to $8,000 USD for the wedding day, and more for multi-day celebrations with film. Most couples marrying in Cancun book six to eight hours, so the coverage reaches from getting ready to the party. We are local, so travel within Cancun is included or minimal.
